Splashy Photos From HC Crew

Hawaiian Chieftain crewman Alex Marts sent us these splashy photos. Top: Capt. Jeremiah "Miah" Gempler stands watch as the Chieftain's bow plunges into a swell. Middle: Another stormy shot, but more of a close-up. Bottom: Alex and David Bonner get dunked on the bowsprit during a Battle Sail. Email your favorite photos to us and we may put them on the blog!

Seaport Landing Logo Design Contest

The Historical Seaport has announced a contest to design a logo for Seaport Landing, our new home port planned for the Aberdeen waterfront. We need to give the project a compelling visual identity and we thought a contest would be a great way to get the community involved. We're interested in entries from graphic artists, public relations firms, web designers, anyone with a good idea. If you think you have a winning idea, visit our Seaport Landing page and download the rules and entry form.

The deadline for entry is Feb. 2, 2009. We'll go through the entries and pick three finalists. We'll post the finalists' entries on our website and let site visitors vote on their favorite. The winners will be announced Feb. 17. Prizes include gift certificates for sailings aboard the Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain. The winning artist will also be acknowledged on printed materials, a new website, and on signage. Even if you're not interested, please let your friends know about this. We want lots of entries!

Gift Certificates Now Available

Struggling with holiday gift ideas? Want to give an experience rather than stuff? The Historical Seaport is now offering gift certificates for any Lady Washington and/or Hawaiian Chieftain sailing, even ones we haven't scheduled yet. Call us at 800-200-5239 during business hours and we'll be happy to issue you a gift certificate in any amount, though we recommend $100 or more to cover most of the cost of a pair of tickets. (Prices range from $35 to $60 each.) And the certificate never expires! Can you think of anything better than a trip on a ship that's a movie star?

Fan Photo: Hawaiian Chieftain On Monterey Bay

Gil Aguilar, a guest on a Moss Landing sailing on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, sent us this nicely framed photo of the Hawaiian Chieftain out on Monterey Bay. Note the bright new sails, courtesy of our wonderful donors! Seaport Landing Design Unveiled

The Historical Seaport unveiled its design for Seaport Landing on the south bank of the Chehalis River just east of the Chehalis River Bridge. (See previous blog entry for details about today's unveiling.) The top image looks southwest, showing the main building with a land-based replica of the historic schooner Wawona, which would be used for educational programs. The Chehalis River is in the foreground. The second image is an elevation looking east and north. To see these slightly larger, click the image and a bigger version should pop up. We'd love your feedback!
Many thanks to volunteer Robert Johnson, who created these images for us. We'll be publishing more details about our plans next week on our website. Stay tuned!

Seaport Landing Unveiling Draws Crowd

More than 40 people attended the Historical Seaport's unveiling today of the design for Seaport Landing, our destination tourism and ship maintenance facility on the Chehalis River between the Weyerhaueser sawmill and the Chehalis River Bridge. The meeting took place over lunch at the Aberdeen Elks Lodge. Capt. Les Bolton, our executive director, and Tony Halekakis, a member of our board, led the presentation. We'll post more details about the plan next week.
But for now, here's a few pictures from the meeting. Top: Les and Dennis Crowley of Crowley Marine stand next to some beautiful renderings of the design (see next blog entry). Middle: Les and Tony show a PowerPoint bringing everyone up-to-date on Seaport activities, including the plans for Seaport Landing. Bottom: Les listens to Tom Janes of The Washington Store in downtown Aberdeen make a suggestion. (Shameless plug here: The Seaport has some great Christmas gift items at the store at 117 Wishkah Street.)

New Sailings Added for the Holidays

Our schedule in San Pedro opened up a bit and we've added Battle Sails, Adventure Sails, and walk-aboard tour availability between Christmas and January 5, when we head to Long Beach. If you're looking for something fun for yourself and/or the kids/rels on the weekends after Christmas and New Years, why not take a tall ship trip? And while you're thinking about holiday gift ideas, how about a memorable experience, instead of yet more stuff? (See previous post.) Check out our home page and Sailing Schedule page for a detailed schedule.

Give the Gift of Tall Ships, Paper Says

The Tacoma News Tribune published a great story with some "experience instead of stuff" gift ideas for the holidays, including a sailing on the Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain! Here's the article. And if you think the gift is right for you, visit our home page for a schedule of our upcoming Battle Sails and Adventure Sails.

Fan Photo: Climbing the Ratlines

John Wilson, a guest and photographer who sailed with us last Sunday, sent in this photo of two crew climbing the ratlines of the Hawaiian Chieftain (I think). Not sure what the smokey stuff is floating about the top of the photo. If you have a favorite photo of Hawaiian Chieftain or Lady Washington to share, send it to photos@historicalseaport.org.

Fan Photo: Lady Washington at Moss Landing

Now here's a different take on the standard tall-ship snapshot. The contributor, Bruce Stenman, who lives near Moss Landing, Calif., took the picture of the Lady Washington as she was returning from a recent sailing. He worked on giving the photo the appearance of age. I don't know about you, but it looks very authentic. It reminds me of late 19th-century hand-tinted photos. The near total lack of artificial lights on the boat or the background really clinch it. Is it 2008 or 1858? Do you have an unusual photo of Lady Washington or Hawaiian Chieftain? Email it to photos@historicalseaport.org.

Fan Photos: Whales Off California Coast

Thar they blow! Anne Young, a volunteer on the Hawaiian Chieftain during the recent passage from Sacramento to Half Moon Bay, Calif., took these photos of curious whales somewhere off the coast. Can anyone identify the species? Send your favorite photos of activities aboard the Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain to photos@historicalseaport.org.

Fan Photos: Crew in Moss Landing

Richard Herbert, a guest on our Nov. 29 Battle Sail, took these portraits of Lady Washington crew. Do you have a favorite photo of our ships or crew? Email them to photos@historicalseaport.org.
