New and Improved Historical Seaport Online Store

The holiday gift-giving season is just around the corner and the Historical Seaport would like to invite you to check out exciting gift ideas at the new and improved online Ship’s Store at www.seaportstore.com. In partnership with Yahoo! Merchant Solutions, the Historical Seaport has re-launched the Ship’s Store with popular Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain clothing, collectibles, and unique gifts. All purchases made through the Ship’s Store support educational programs aboard our ships.

New this year at the Ship’s Store are collectable, hand-made knives made by Billfish Art Design of Grays Harbor. These one-of-a-kind art objects feature stainless steel blades with carved handles of a variety of woods and natural materials. The knives are available in several nautical styles, including rigging knives, sailor’s knives, and survival knives. To see photos of the knives, visit www.seaportstore.com. More information about Billfish Art Design is at www.billfishartdesign.com.

In addition to knives, the Ship’s Store at the Historical Seaport offers sweatshirts, t-shirts and hats with screen-printed or appliquéd images of Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain. The Ship’s Store also features special gift items, holiday ornaments, and stocking stuffers.

The Ship’s Store recommends purchase and shipping of gifts for the holidays by Dec. 18 to ensure delivery by Dec. 24.

Lady Washington is currently conducting educational programs in Pasco as part of its fall Columbia River voyage. Hawaiian Chieftain is currently in Oakland, Calif. on its fall and winter tour of California ports.

Marine Operations Manager to Survey Tall Ship

Capt. Micah Allnutt, marine operations manager for the Grays Harbor Historical Seaport Authority, will conduct a survey of the tall ship Falls of Clyde, one of the last iron-hulled full-rigged ships in the world. Allnutt will travel to Hawaii this month to work with a ship preservation specialist to determine the initial scope of work and the specific needs of the Falls of Clyde in preparation for a haul-out next year and a full restoration. The survey is expected to take about a week to complete. Allnutt will take a brief leave of absence from GHHSA for the Falls of Clyde project.

Currently berthed in Honolulu, Hawaii, Falls of Clyde is one of one of five vessels built in Glasgow, Scotland that were eventually put into service in the American merchant trades. The other four are the Balclutha in San Francisco, the Star of India in San Diego, the Peking in New York City, and the Moshulu in Philadelphia. During his 20-year career in the maritime industry, Allnutt has worked on several tall ships, including Balclutha. Allnutt was hired earlier this year by GHHSA as marine operations manager for Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain. More information on the Falls of Clyde is available at www.friendsoffallsofclyde.org.

The Lady Washington is currently on the Columbia River conducting education programs at several river ports. When she returns to Grays Harbor in December, Allnutt will oversee installation of a new engine and rigging upgrades. The Hawaiian Chieftain is offering similar programs in California ports, and is scheduled to return to the region in the spring.

Volunteer Sought for Grant Writing

Do you want to practice your grant writing skills? Do you need experience for your resume? Do you believe in tall ship education? We need you! The Historical Seaport is seeking a volunteer grant writer to help us with several fundraising projects. We are currently raising $100,000 to purchase a new engine for Lady Washington, and we hope to raise up to $6 million for Seaport Landing, our new home port on the Chehalis River in Aberdeen, Wash. A volunteer could also help us with smaller program grants to support our K-12 educational programs.

If you are interested in volunteering, please send your resume and a note of interest to ghhsa_admin@historicalseaport.org, or call 800-200-5239 and ask for Reasa. Thank you!
